New Home and Studio!

Farm-pond-daytime-mac-coffee-IMG_7592I’ve recently moved to the country and am enjoying being closer to nature. This photo is of the view from my studio in September, the month that I moved here. My morning coffee has never tasted better. 🙂

Nature is very inspiring. I’ve started a bird series. Chickadee has just been launched and it actually contains bits of the farm in it! It is a fundraiser to help us keep this beautiful 300-acre farm intact. I am making only 25 of these artworks. They are $95, including framing and tax. If you would like to enquire about the status of the edition, please contact me any time. Your support is humbly appreciated. (A little back story on the farm: we have stepped in during the threat of foreclosure and have come to an agreement with the bank and the township to get the property back on its feet.)

Below are a few shots through the autumn and winter seasons. I will post more when I’ve had a chance to setup. In the meantime, if you’re on Facebook, I’ve got “The Farm” album of photos up there already.

I hope to be part of the local studio tour and would be happy to send you an invitation. If you are not yet on my mailing list, you may subscribe here.

Mini Fish, paper mosaic, $227, tax-free.

This paper mosaic piece is entirely handmade, including the frame. This is an original process creating the visual effect of tile mosaic using various handmade, recycled and acid-free crafting papers and acrylic gel. The glass-like, glossy finish is easy to keep clean and can be safely dusted or wiped with a damp cloth. The frame has multiple coats of paint and varathane to ensure a solid finish. Mounted with a wire hanger. Although it looks like tile mosaic it is very light, easy to hang and offers no worries about transport.

This piece is signed and logged in a series of 25.

There is a greeting card based on this series.

Cool 3-D Illusion Street Art

To celebrate my bringing art to the streets of Ottawa (ByWard Market), here is some very impressive actual street art, painted directly on the pavement to give the illusion of a 3D space on a flat surface. WOW, these people are talented!

I am 1 of 40 Official Artists of Canadian Tulip Festival!

tulipsI’m very proud to announce that I have become one of just 40 Official Artists of this year’s Canadian Tulip Festival.

In 1945, the Dutch royal family sent 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa in gratitude for Canadians having sheltered Princess Juliana and her daughters for the preceding three years during the Second World War. In 1953, an 18-day festival was born to preserve and celebrate that heritage. It has become the largest tulip festival in the world.

I am honoured to be called a 2013 Official Artist of the festival. The 40 artists’ renditions of tulips can be seen at City Hall throughout the festival.

  • Ottawa City Hall Plaza
  • “Tulip Gallery”
  • May 3-20, 2013

Month of May at Linda Street Gallery

If you’re in the Westboro neighbourhood, check out my solo show at Linda Street Gallery (lobby of the city’s Dovercourt Recreation Centre). I’ve got an excellent cross-section of my paper mosaics there from May 1 to May 30th.

Insects in Modern Art

The Caddis Fly larva builds its home by weaving silk with tiny sticks and particles found at the bottom of a pond or river, where it lives. Contemporary French artist Hubert Duprat used their habits in an experiment that would have them using jewels, gold, and shiny objects to make their homes. The results are beautiful. See the short video here.
